Young people experiencing homelessness in Logan City, Queensland, have found a second chance at life through the Logan Youth Foyer program. Summer Coco, who once slept in her car with a knife under her pillow, shared her experience of being homeless for three years, unable to finish high school while working double shifts to survive.
Summer’s story is not unique, as statistics show that 37% of homeless individuals in Queensland are under 25 years old. Kate, facing homelessness as she turned 18 within the child safety system, expressed the fear and uncertainty of not having a place to go until she was accepted into the Logan Youth Foyer Support Service.
The Logan Youth Foyer program, offering housing, education, social connections, and psychological support, aims to empower young people to thrive independently. Residents like Kate have benefited from the program, completing high school and gaining employment opportunities, breaking the cycle of homelessness.
Rachael Holmes, the program coordinator, highlighted the necessity of such services in providing a safe environment for young people who would otherwise struggle to secure stable accommodation. The program’s success is evident in the reduced likelihood of residents being involved in the justice system and the high percentage transitioning to secure housing and employment.
Since its inception in 2009, the Logan Youth Foyer has supported over 300 individuals, including Claire Totila, who found stability and guidance through the program. Claire’s journey from homelessness to homeownership and pursuing higher education showcases the transformative impact of the program in nurturing resilience and self-belief.
Looking ahead, the program aims to expand to more locations across Queensland to cater to the growing demand for youth homelessness support. Ms. Holmes emphasized the need for increased government investment in secure housing and support services to empower the next generation and foster successful outcomes for young adults.
For young individuals like Summer Coco, the Logan Youth Foyer program has not only provided a stable living environment but also opened doors to a brighter future. With newfound opportunities and support, these young people are rewriting their narratives and building a foundation for long-term success.
