Recognized for its innovation, the gasification plant at the Loganholme Wastewater Treatment Plant received prestigious awards, including being named Australia’s premier Infrastructure Project Innovation at Ozwater’23. The facility’s success has attracted national and international attention, with over 400 visitors attending tours in a single financial year.

City of Logan Mayor, Darren Power, commended the project for its transformative impact on wastewater operations, emphasizing the cost savings, emission reduction, and environmental benefits. The gasification process, powered by solar energy, exemplifies a circular economy model by efficiently treating biosolids and producing biochar, a valuable soil conditioner with diverse agricultural applications.

Studies conducted by Logan Water have highlighted the product’s ability to eliminate nano-plastics and enhance soil carbon content, contributing to Australia’s greenhouse gas reduction targets. The biochar’s potential extends beyond agriculture, attracting interest from industries like land care and construction as a sustainable additive.

Moreover, the gasification facility aligns with Logan City Council’s commitment to environmental sustainability, leading to the council’s recent carbon neutrality certification. Over its 20-year lifespan, the plant is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 129,000 tonnes, supporting the city’s growing population while minimizing its environmental impact.

Council initiatives, such as the conversion of food and organic waste into bioenergy, further underscore Logan’s dedication to emission reduction and sustainable waste management. Collaborating with ARENA and the University of Queensland, Logan Water aims to explore the feasibility of producing biomethane gas and fertilizers from household waste, showcasing a holistic approach to waste diversion and energy generation.

The council’s long-term vision includes expanding its circular economy model through the sale of biochar, creating revenue streams within the carbon market and promoting sustainable waste reuse. As Logan City continues to evolve, innovative projects like biosolids gasification play a vital role in shaping a clean, green future for the community.

With ongoing research and partnerships driving environmental stewardship and resource efficiency, Logan City Council remains at the forefront of sustainable practices, setting a benchmark for local governments nationwide.
