Transurban Group has announced its partnership with the Queensland State Government to enhance the Logan Motorway’s western section. The Logan Motorway is a crucial transport route in South-East Queensland, facilitating the movement of over $1 billion in freight daily and offering access to key locations like the Brisbane Airport and Port of Brisbane.
With approximately 210,000 trips made on the Logan Motorway each day, the escalating congestion poses challenges to productivity and road safety. In response, Transurban’s Logan West Upgrade project aims to alleviate congestion, enhance road safety, and reduce travel times. The project involves adding extra lanes in both directions along specific sections of the motorway, upgrading interchanges, implementing smart motorway technologies, and increasing vehicle height capacity to accommodate over-dimensional vehicles.
Upon completion, the Logan West Upgrade project is projected to decrease travel times by up to 20 minutes during peak hours by 2031 and divert around 6,100 vehicles from local streets. Michelle Jablko, Transurban’s CEO, emphasized the significance of this collaboration in delivering efficient road transport solutions and essential infrastructure to support Brisbane’s anticipated growth.
Brisbane, being the third largest city in Australia, is poised for substantial expansion in the upcoming years. The Logan West Upgrade project is designed to meet the needs of this growth by enhancing travel efficiency along a critical Brisbane freight route, promoting road safety, and fostering sustainable development in the region.
Looking ahead, community engagement is set to begin in the latter part of 2024, with Transurban and the Queensland Government working together to establish a viable funding model. Once approved, the construction is slated for completion before the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games, aligning with the city’s infrastructure development goals.
Transurban’s proactive approach in addressing transport challenges through strategic partnerships underscores the importance of public-private collaboration in enhancing urban infrastructure and ensuring sustainable urban development. The Logan West Upgrade project stands as a testament to effective cooperation between government entities and private enterprises in delivering innovative solutions to meet the evolving needs of growing metropolitan areas.
As Brisbane gears up for future expansion and increased economic activity, initiatives like the Logan West Upgrade project play a pivotal role in enhancing the city’s connectivity, economic competitiveness, and overall quality of life for residents and businesses alike.
Transurban’s commitment to investing in critical infrastructure projects underscores the company’s dedication to fostering economic growth, improving transport efficiency, and enhancing the overall well-being of communities it serves. By collaborating with government stakeholders and leveraging innovative technologies, Transurban continues to drive positive change and create lasting benefits for urban environments and their inhabitants.
